Throughout the Massim area there are different myths that explain the creation of man and the custom of betel chewing. A specific myth that deals with the origin and spread of betel chewing follows below. It was told by the chief of Labai Village in northern Kiriwina, which is part of the Trobriand Islands.

Dovana and his brother were among the first people to come out of Obuwaga cave near Labai. Dovana brought all the betel-chewing ingredients and utensils with him. One day Dovana asked his brother to get some fire from his hut. When his brother did not return for a long time, Dovana followed and found him making love to his (Dovana's) wife. On seeing this, he killed him with a spear. He took the corpse south and in every village he asked people to eat part of the corpse. Those who ate were rewarded with betel-nuts, but the people of most villages refused. So Dovana took the corpse and the betel-nuts to the D'Entrecasteaux. This explains why there are more betel-nuts in the D'Entrecasteaux than in the Trobriands.
